Following the rap stylings of Tom Hanks’ studio-gangsta son, Chet Haze, we now find ourselves confronted with a new hip-hop effort from another kid possessing famous DNA. Fifteen-year-old Pablo Dylan, grandson of Bob, and son of music-video director Jesse (Tom Petty, Lenny Kravitz, will.i.am), has just dropped his debut mixtape, 10 Minutes, and it’s pretty… underwhelming.
Pablo, an Eminem fan, collaborated with Darnell Robinson, K-Major, and Young Money’s Lil Chuckee on the first single, “Top of the World.” The unoriginal song title and the overuse of Auto-Tune immediately raise a red flag here; the inability to refrain from alluding to his famous gramps and the weak lyrics confirm our worries. Sample: “Understand I really do come from scrutiny/ and mutiny/ ‘cos my people turned their back on me/ I’m the grandson of a man/ nothing less than legendary/ That’s a lot of pressure/ so I Berry Gordy/ I am very Motown, bitch.”
It’s nice to hear that the guy who kind-of-rapped on “Subterranean Homesick Blues” supports his grandson. Pablo said:
“I mean, really, my grandfather, I consider him the Jay-Z of his time, and he definitely has a legacy that a lot of people look up to. He feels strongly about my music and I love him to death. Of course we do two different things, and I don’t want people to see me for what he has done. But, what I have done, I mean from a musical and personal standpoint, is definitely influenced by him. Everyone around me influences me, and I have learned so much from him just listening to his records, but I hope his music continues to live on through what I continue to do the rest of my life.”
So the kid has his head on straight, and we don’t want to come down too hard on a fifteen-year-old exploring his musical options. And this makes sense in a world where Hanks’ kid is spitting lyrics about the gangster life, while the Notorious B.I.G.’s son, C.J. Wallace, is an actor. But hopefully this is a forgettable footnote in Pablo’s career, something to chuckle about in retrospect, after he picks up a guitar and starts jamming with his uncle Jakob.
