A squirrel monkey stolen from San Francisco Zoo has been returned safe and sound, zoo officials have said.

Banana-Sam, who was taken after vandals cut the netting around his enclosure late on Thursday or early on Friday was found in a park just a couple of miles from the zoo, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

A visitor to the park lured the 17-year-old orange and grey primate into his backpack before taking him to the police.

Zoo workers had warned members of the public to be wary of the animal, which is just one foot (30cm) tall and weighs 2lb (0.9kg), saying “he has extremely sharp teeth and will definitely bite if provoked”.

Police returned Banana-Sam to the zoo on Saturday evening. Staff said that apart from being “hungry, trembling and thirsty” the monkey was not in bad health, despite not having access to his usual specialised diet or his monkey companion, who was not taken from their enclosure.
